This unit covers the Twelfth through the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost in
Lectionary Year A. During this unit students will understand that God works
where people are in unity, the power of forgiveness and grace, and the
importance of obedience.
Lesson 1: Remember How to Live --There is a God-given power in community. In this lesson students will learn that God works where people are in agreement. Also, God provides direction to keep that community from being influenced by those who will not listen to instruction (Ezekiel 33:7-11, Psalm 119:33-40, Romans 13:8-14, Matthew 18:15-20).
Lesson 2: Why Can t We All Just Get Along?-- The rules for living in the Kingdom of God are different from those of the world. In this lessons students will learn that Jesus teaches us the way to make our relationships right--through unlimited forgiveness and by giving others grace on their journey (Exodus 14:19-31, Psalm 114, Romans 14:1-12, Matthew 18:21-35 (Optional Passages: Genesis 50:15-21,;Exodus 15:1b-11, 20-21; Psalm 103:1-13).
Lesson 3: Living Generously-- The parable of the workers in the vineyard illustrates for us the sovereign, generous grace of God. This grace, however, defies human reasoning. In this lesson students will learn that long-time believers must come to a new understanding of God's grace to accept and rejoice with those who have newly received the Kingdom (Exodus 16:2-15; Psalm 105:1-6, 37-45; Philippians 1:21-30; Matthew 20:1-16 (Optional Passages: Jonah 3:10-4:11; Psalm 145:1-8).
Lesson 4: Put One Foot in Front of the Other-- Distrust of God and disobedience are the heart of a sinful life. In contrast, trusting God and following through with obedience are the heart of the faithful life. In this lessons students will learn that if we want to live in faithfulness to God, our hearts must trust Him, and we must live out what we believe in our actions (Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 78:1-4, 12-16; Philippians 2:1-13
